BMAAAC helps Band members get access to justice to hold elected Chiefs and Band Councils accountable. Although BMAAAC is driven by indigenous people, its membership is open to the general public, too!
Our mandate is to advocate on behalf of Band members in Canada that are experiencing financial abuse by their Chief and Council. We achieve our mandate by retaining lawyers to take cases to court and to mediation for and on behalf of Band members in Canada. We also retain lawyers to provide legal opinions for Band members. Our experienced in-house team is here to help Band members in Canada. All BMAAAC services are free of charge. We will hire an in-house legal counsel in the near future.

On June 3, 2015, history was made. It was the first time in Canada that a Band member put a stop to a Band Council’s unauthorized personal paydays. The late Wayne Louie was the Band member that stood up and said, "Enough was enough". It was the first time in Canada that a Band member used legal action to force Chief and Council to pay back money that they wrongfully took from the Band. That landmark court case is Louie v. Louie (2015, BC Court of Appeal). A Band member fought the Band Council – and the Band member won!
In December 2019, BMAAAC President Rob Louie became an author when his legal article entitled, “I heard the band office call my name” was published in the Canadian Journal of Native Studies. This legal article is based on Louie v. Louie and it describes various aspects of the law as it applies to Band Councils.

To create a national organization that will advance and defend Indigenous Band Members’ equality and human rights, on one hand, while also pressing for a level of fiscal integrity in Band Governments that is consistent with their fiduciary duty to Band members. Band Members Alliance and Advocacy Association of Canada recognizes that the current structures of Band Government are not, in the majority of instances, consistent with their traditional governing structures. The Band Members Alliance and Advocacy Association of Canada will seek substantive improvements in these areas through legal research, public awareness, litigation, and law and policy reform.
